Project Overview

Trail Surveys was appointed to conduct a detailed road survey across a 400 km route in Zambia. The project aimed to capture accurate topographical and terrain data to guide engineering design and road construction planning.

The survey began in November, but progress was significantly delayed by the rainy season, which made aerial and ground operations difficult. Once weather conditions improved, work resumed, and the project was successfully completed in February. Despite the challenges, Trail Surveys delivered a high-quality dataset within the revised schedule, demonstrating flexibility and professionalism in demanding field conditions.

Our Approach: LiDAR Road Scanning and Drone Mapping

Trail Surveys employed lidar road scanning in combination with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mapping to collect precise elevation and surface data across the full 400 km stretch.

By mounting LiDAR systems on an aircraft, the team captured high-resolution data at speed, significantly reducing field time while ensuring centimetre-level accuracy. To maintain uniform reference points and enhance positional integrity, benchmarks were placed every 500 meters along the route.

The integration of 3D laser scanning, GNSS positioning, and aerial imaging produced comprehensive digital terrain models (DTMs) that supported design, alignment, and drainage planning.

Technology in Action

LiDAR road scanning offers a distinct advantage for long-distance surveys by providing dense, georeferenced point-cloud data that can penetrate vegetation and accurately represent ground surfaces.

The Zambian terrain presented a variety of challenges, from dense bush to open plains, requiring adaptable data collection methods. Trail Surveys’ combination of aerial LiDAR and ground control ensured complete and accurate coverage throughout the project.

Post-processing transformed the raw LiDAR data into precise 3D terrain models, contour maps, and orthophotos—resources that are essential for engineering design, route optimization, and environmental assessment.

Results and Achievements in LiDAR Road Scanning

Despite the delays caused by the rainy season, the project was completed in February and met all technical accuracy and delivery requirements.

Key results included:

  • Mapping of 400 km of road alignment using LiDAR and drone integration.
  • Benchmarks placed every 500 meters for consistent data alignment.
  • Creation of detailed digital terrain and elevation models.
  • Significant time savings compared to conventional ground-based surveys.

This project showcases Trail Surveys’ capability to execute complex geomatics operations efficiently and accurately, even under challenging environmental conditions. The successful delivery reinforces the company’s position as a leader in lidar road scanning and large-scale surveying solutions across Africa.

Conclusion

The Zambia road-survey project stands as an example of Trail Surveys’ commitment to technical excellence and innovation. Through the strategic use of lidar road scanning, advanced drone mapping, and an experienced survey team, the company delivered a precise, high-quality dataset that supports the development of critical infrastructure in Africa.
